Urgent & Emergency Care

About this service:

NMRTC Newport does not provide emergency care. If a true emergency exists (threat to life, limb or sight), call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room. If on base, call 401-841-3333 for emergency medical support. Emergency services do not require advance authorization.

Urgent care services are also a covered TRICARE benefit. Active-duty service members MUST request advance authorization prior to seeking treatment at an urgent care facility. Urgent care services are medically necessary services required for an illness or injury that would not result in further disability or death but require professional attention and have the potential to develop into such a threat if treatment is delayed longer than 24 hours. Urgent care conditions include, but are not limited to, sprains, sore throat, or a rising temperature.  In an urgent care situation, call the Navy Medicine Readiness and Training Command New England (NMRTC NE) Appointment Call Center, during clinic business hours, at 888-628-9633. The call center staff will contact the Medical Homeport team and a staff member will contact you directly and may provide you advice on how to handle your urgent care need, such as provide an acute appointment the next clinic day for you, or advice you to seek appropriate care at a civilian Urgent Care Center. If you need medical assistance after regular business hours or on the weekends, please call the Nurse Advice Line at 1-800-874-2273, and press option 1 to speak to a registered nurse. They are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. They can book appointments at the different clinics, place referrals for active duty to go to an urgent care, give professional health care advice, answer questions, or direct you to network urgent care or emergency room if appropriate.
